{"id":17705,"date":"2022-03-29T13:19:05","date_gmt":"2022-03-29T13:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/us\/emma-harris-female-leaders"},"modified":"2022-03-29T13:19:05","modified_gmt":"2022-03-29T13:19:05","slug":"emma-harris-female-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/us\/emma-harris-female-leaders","title":{"rendered":"International Women\u2019s Day: Stories from female leaders at The Social Element (3)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As part of our series around International Women\u2019s Day, we asked members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedrum.com\/news\/2021\/10\/11\/the-social-element-the-all-female-leadership-team-disrupting-social-media-marketing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Social Element executive team<\/a> about their experiences as women in marketing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This week, we hear from our chief creative officer, Emma Harris. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma has a unique perspective: she is both a member of The Social Element\u2019s executive team and the founder of her own business, Glow London.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen vimeo\"><iframe title=\"Emma Harris: Chief Creative Officer\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/689662063?h=12c8b9d1f3&amp;dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"1170\" height=\"658\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inspiration from differences<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma\u2019s inspired by people whose perspective and way of thinking are different to her own. She tells us that Wendy Christie (who has an almost opposite DiSC profile to her) is a particular inspiration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where Emma moves fast, always wanting to get things done right away, Wendy keeps things grounded, spending time thinking through what the vision will look like in action and what effect changes will have on people. Emma\u2019s learned a lot from working with someone who takes such a different approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We all have things we can learn and things we can teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Always be doing the next job<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma\u2019s advice to women starting their careers would be <em>\u201cdon\u2019t wait for that promotion\u201d. <\/em>Show people what you want (and what you\u2019re capable of) by doing it already.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ask yourself what things would look like from the next rung up the ladder and start behaving like you\u2019re already there. Never be in a situation where you\u2019re saying, <em>\u201cif I got that job, I would\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women often downplay their skills and achievements. It\u2019s easy to think that if you work hard enough, someone will eventually reward you with a promotion. But it\u2019s a strategy that relies on having a boss who\u2019s more passionate about your career development than you are. Emma\u2019s advice is a reminder that we should all advocate for ourselves much more than we do, and become our own biggest cheerleaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be proud and confident about being a woman<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma had a very strong female role model growing up &#8211; her mum. So when it was time for Emma to enter the workforce, she was very secure about what she could achieve, regardless of her gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI never step into a room worrying about my gender. I see my femininity as a strength, but being smart, funny and collaborative &#8211; that\u2019s what matters,\u201d<\/em> she says.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don\u2019t underestimate the power of building rapport with others<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For Emma, one of the most powerful skills you can have in business is the ability to build rapport. While some people worry about whether they\u2019re smart enough to get ahead, Emma believes that it\u2019s relationship-building that\u2019s the real key to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><strong>\u201cPeople buy people. If you use rapport to connect w<\/strong>i<strong>t<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>h other people, you can achieve anything,\u201d <\/em>she says.<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many skills can be taught, but having that genuine human connection is something else. Her advice?
