I Can&#039;t Hide Facebook Comments Any More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Facebook seems to have thrown its moderators and community managers yet another unannounced curve ball, and you\u00a0can&#8217;t hide Facebook comments any more.\u00a0 When moderating, the old &#8216;hide&#8217; option has disappeared, both from a comment left on a wall \u2018post by other\u2019 or a comment made upon a Page post update. You may only delete it and then &#8211; immediately afterwards &#8211;\u00a0 have the option to un-delete.\u00a0 <em>Update 2 August &#8211; According to InsideFacebook, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insidefacebook.com\/2012\/08\/01\/facebook-bug-prevents-some-page-owners-from-being-able-to-hide-spam-comments\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+InsideFacebook+%28Inside+Facebook%29\">Facebook say it is a bug <\/a>and they are working on it.\u00a0 Let&#8217;s hope it is, and they fix it soon.<\/em><br \/>\nInterestingly though, Facebook now offers the option to ban\/unban and message the user directly from the comment &#8230; see the screen grabs below.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Once they\u2019re gone, they\u2019re gone<\/strong><br \/>\nThe removed posts are not showing up as the \u2018little row of dots\u2019 in the commenting either &#8211; so once they are gone, although you can choose to immediately undo your action, they leave no trace of your moderation action.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Spam \u2018auto-hides\u2019 unaffected<\/strong><br \/>\nHowever, it seems that when FB decides a comment is spam and auto-hides it, we can then still view the hidden comments and unhide them again if we choose.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Why that\u2019s a problem for us<\/strong><br \/>\nThis may not be important to some, but it is for our moderation and community management teams for two reasons:<br \/>\nFirstly, it\u2019s crucial to be able to justify our each and every action to a client and reverse it if there is disagreement \u2013 which is one reason why the \u2018hide\u2019 function was so important. Now, unless our clients have opted to use a third party tool to moderate their Facebook Page (and we recommend this), moderators will have to laboriously record the content and timing of each and every user post we deem to have fallen foul of the Page terms in order to give us the audit trail and quality assurance that our reputation is built on. This severely impacts the number of comments a moderator can get through on a shift.<br \/>\nSecondly, the \u2018hide\u2019 function was important as when it was used, the user posting &#8211; and their friends &#8211; could still see the comment and were not aware it had been hidden. \u00a0Especially useful for crisis situations where to delete \/ not to delete may make all the difference to public sentiment, this gives our clients time to be consulted on whether they wanted a comments to be visible to the public or not.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Thanks for letting us know, Facebook<\/strong><br \/>\nA quick Google search on the issue reveals no other articles on the topic at the time of writing, which confirms our feeling that this has been rolled out without any kind of announcement.\u00a0 Obviously Facebook wouldn\u2019t have listened to the concerns of community managers \u2013 when do they ever? \u2013 but some forewarning, description of, and justification for the change would have been appreciated.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Moderating comments in Facebook<\/strong> &#8211; it works the same from the front end of the activity log, basically.<br \/>\n1.\u00a0 Hover above the &#8216;x&#8217; in the top right of a comment<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-7774 aligncenter lazyload\" title=\"testing Facebook deletes 1\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"http:\/\/emoderation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2012\/08\/testing-Facebook-deletes-11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"587\" height=\"213\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n2.
