John William Templeton and Frederick E. Jordan Sr founded National Black Business Month in 2004.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Groupon and The National Black Chamber of Commerce recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20200730005884\/en\/Action-August-Black-Business-Month-Survey-Finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">surveyed more than 400 Black small business owners<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>80% said they faced more challenges launching their businesses due to their race<\/li><li>74% said they\u2019ve had fewer opportunities due to a lack of capital investment and resources targeted towards Black communities<\/li><li>76% of Black-owned businesses said they were negatively impacted by COVID-19, but only 5% of those that applied for Paycheck Protection Program loan received one<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Black Business Month is especially important this year as an opportunity to draw attention to and fight against the challenges faced by Black businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Our advice to clients<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Each brand has its own context<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.groupon.com\/merchant\/blog\/national-black-business-month\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Groupon<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/7\/31\/21348990\/google-black-owned-businesses-maps-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google<\/a> are great case studies in how to create change as a platform. There are many ways to be an advocate in other industries, especially on social.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Are you a Black-owned business?<\/strong> If so, August is a wonderful time to celebrate that identity and tell your story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before deciding whether or not to join the conversation, <strong>brands need to establish whether they have earned a right to be in the space based on how they\u2019ve supported efforts in the past<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you\u2019ve established this credibility, you have the space to be seen as authentic<\/strong> with your messaging. If not, the message will come across as self-serving. Perception is extremely important.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Participating in Black Business Month:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend that brands evaluate their context to the Black community and review their content and engagement tactics based on that.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>If celebrating Black Business Month aligns with your values, this is a good time to use your platform to amplify Black businesses, Black entrepreneurs, or causes that assist both. <\/strong>We can help you strategize, ideate and create content for this.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be prepared for questions and even backlash &#8211; <strong>have a communications plan in place.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is Black Business Month?
