{"id":22056,"date":"2023-01-25T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T16:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/?p=22056"},"modified":"2023-09-09T16:05:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-09T15:05:14","slug":"social-media-trends-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/social-media-trends-community","title":{"rendered":"Social Media Community Fostering Trends"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p><strong>Community has never been more important than now.<\/strong> The last few years have been rough for so many of us, but what got many of us through were our amazing friends and colleagues. When we couldn\u2019t meet face-to-face, we all connected online instead.\u00a0As we look at the 2023 social media trends, this is one to watch.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The nature of our communities and our friendships is changing.<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>We\u2019re more comfortable moving between online and offline social and work spaces, and we\u2019re focusing more on the people who really matter to us.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>In the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americansurveycenter.org\/research\/the-state-of-american-friendship-change-challenges-and-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">41% of Americans<\/a> said they had three friends or fewer. In 1990, 33% of Americans reported having 10 or more friends &#8211; this figure had dropped to 13% by 2021.<\/li>\r\n<li>In the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/topics\/society\/articles-reports\/2021\/12\/16\/yougov-friendship-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">26% of people<\/a> said they had friends they\u2019d never met in person. 40% percent said they\u2019d lost contact with some friends since the start of the pandemic, and 14% said they wouldn\u2019t be getting back in touch.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2022\/03\/23\/brits-have-lost-an-average-of-four-friends-since-start-of-the-pandemic-16325854\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UK survey<\/a> (2022) revealed that 32% of people had fallen out with friends or family during the pandemic (55% for young Londoners). Sixty-eight percent of people who said they felt their mental health had improved during the pandemic reported losing seven friendships since 2020.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p><strong>These principles apply to our online social networks, too.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>TikTok has been fantastic at creating communities, and continues to go from strength to strength. From #BookTok to the more niche #WitchTok, people come together around the topics they love, using hashtags to share content. This is something Chloe Mathieu Phillips talked about in her post last year on <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/tiktok-communities-brand-opportunity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>How Brands are Creating (and Contributing to) TikTok Communities<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>While Twitter used to be a place for people to form and join communities, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/elon-musk-twitter-brands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elon Musk&#8217;s takeover<\/a> has caused a lot of disruption. We\u2019ve seen groups of people migrating to other platforms (sometimes multiple platforms) like <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/the-rise-of-mastodon-twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mastodon<\/a>, Hive, cohost, Tumblr, and Discord, and taking their friends with them.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook are all improving the community features on their platforms, which Jess Martin highlighted in her post for our blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/thesocialelement.agency\/communities-on-social\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Communities on Social<\/em><\/a>, in November.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can your brand create a feeling of online community on its pages in 2023?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>There are some key things you can do to create a real sense of community on your social media pages:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol>\r\n<li><strong>Use social listening<\/strong> effectively to understand what\u2019s important right now to your fans and customers. It may have changed over the last few years. Insights from your listening programme will really help you build communities around the topics people care about.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Find the main platforms that your communities already use.<\/strong> For example, entertainment and gaming brands probably have dedicated subreddits that would welcome relevant brand engagement; other brands may be better suited to contributing to TikTok hashtag-based communities.<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Explore the new features on sites like Instagram and YouTube<\/strong> to support your community, for example\u00a0 by involving creators and community members in creating content (or even managing the community).\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Set the community\u2019s culture and purpose.<\/strong> Why are your fans there, and what do they want from you?\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Engage with and respond to community members regularly.<\/strong> Ask questions, encourage people to contribute, and add value to your community. Create genuine connections with people.
