That is something that would have huge ramifications for any brand that has a large social media strategy for marketing on the platform. For why would you want to spend a huge sum of money on a platform that supposedly is shrinking. Would your money be better spent shifting focus to another social platform?<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>The cry for action: #DeleteFacebook<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YourMarkLubbers\/status\/976164487274352640?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fapp.brandwatch.com%2Fproject%2F1998235674%2Fdashboards%2F445552\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of a tweet claiming that Facebook has lost a huge amount, both financially and in terms of users:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DeleteFacebook?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DeleteFacebook<\/a> hashtag is trending on the internet. It shows that his Facebook account was blocked following his revelation of the information regarding Cambridge Analytica.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The URL was shared 43,322 times, with 74,635,323 impressions.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Suspended by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/facebook?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@facebook<\/a>. For blowing the whistle. On something they have known privately for 2 years. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iSu6VwqUdG\">pic.twitter.com\/iSu6VwqUdG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Christopher Wylie (@chrisinsilico) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chrisinsilico\/status\/975335430043389952?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is a timeline of this discussion since the beginning of the year. The data had been gathered by Aleksandr Krogan using a personality test app in 2014. The information was potentially used to influence users to vote for Trump in the 2016 US Election, though the company denies this. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the story develops, Facebook responds by stating that it had given permission to Aleksandr Krogan to harvest the data using his app, but that he had violated Facebook&#8217;s rules by providing it to Cambridge Analytica. Facebook found out about the breach in 2015 and had requested that Cambridge Analytica purge all data acquired from Krogan. Facebook claimed to have only learned from the news reports breaking now that not all the data had in fact been purged as requested. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>It is not what it seems&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite an initial outcry that Facebook had sold the data to Cambridge Analytica, this is not technically true.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It&#8217;s funny how <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MarkZuckerberg?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MarkZuckerberg<\/a> is so concerned about his own privacy that he covered microphone and camera, But sold every users data !<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DeleteFacebookNow?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DeleteFacebookNow<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/deletefacebook?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#deletefacebook<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ironic?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Ironic<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WGJl96NdSD\">pic.twitter.com\/WGJl96NdSD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Om Pande (@Om_pande_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Om_pande_\/status\/979088928627089408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 28, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook allows the collection of user data through third-party apps, though it prohibits the distribution of this data to third parties in its terms. So whilst Aleksandr Krogan did have the platform&#8217;s permission to harvest user data with his personality test app, he then personally delivered the data to Cambridge Analytica. This violates the rules around giving data to third parties. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook discovered his actions in 2015 and demanded Cambridge Analytica to purge all of the user data. However, Facebook chose not to publicly disclose the fact that 50 million users\u2019 data had found its way to a third party. Cambridge Analytica decided to defy Facebook\u2019s request and retained parts of the data, though claims it played no part in the Trump 2016 presidential campaign that they worked on. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the story has come to light, Facebook is attempting to rebuild trust by altering its practices regarding user data. They have announced they will limit that data that will be available to advertisers who are using targeted ads. They will also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2018\/03\/28\/facebook-will-limit-data-advertisers-can-use-to-target-ads\/\">stop offering anonymized data<\/a> to information brokers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So should companies be concerned about the platform moving forward?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is impossible to suggest that this crisis has not had an impact on Facebook as a brand. The company has seen a huge drop in its share price. According to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-43462423\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the BBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (among others), $37 billion was wiped off the value of the company. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the mass exodus of users that the volume of #deletefacebook posts may suggest, it may not be as dire as it looks. Figures compiled by Singapore-based marketing company Kepios, from reports by We Are Social and HootSuite, suggest that in fact site traffic is up since the event. It has increased by as much as 4.5% in the UK and 4.3% in the US. Though <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/minda-zetlin\/for-all-deletefacebook-talk-data-shows-were-using-it-more-not-less.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inc.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does suggest that some of this traffic may, in fact, be people \u201cusing Facebook to complain about Facebook\u201d.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is yet to be seen though is whether this one case of information finding its way into the hands of third parties is a solitary example or just the tip of the iceberg. Since the story broke, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-facebook-poll\/americans-less-likely-to-trust-facebook-than-rivals-on-personal-data-reuters-ipsos-poll-idUSKBN1H10K3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters\/Ipsos poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found that \u201cfewer than half of Americans trust Facebook to obey U.S. privacy laws\u201d, suggesting the company has some way to go before it can rebuild its reputation. However,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/advertisers-didnt-leave-youtube-and-they-wont-leave-facebook-237063\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marketing Land<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0posits that like YouTube before it, advertisers threatening to quit the platform are unlikely to follow through as long as their adverts on the platform continue to produce results!<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the storm seems far from over for Facebook regarding the investigation into their distribution of user data, indications are that the platform will continue to attract just as many users each day.
