It\u2019s an area that I\u2019ve spoken about at TEDx, including my own experience at the hands of trolls, and one that fascinates me. Part of what we do is to consult brands on how to deal with difficult issues and situations on social media.\u00a0 Understanding what environments trolls thrive in is critical to creating communities where they have no place. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MPMqnebI6rs\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when we had a student with an interest in psychology, Stan Campbell, with us last week (you may have seen him on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/socialelementagency\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IGTV videos<\/a>) it was a perfect opportunity to dig deep into the psychology of trolls. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Not All Trolls are the Same<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to its dictionary definition, a troll is: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someone who posts\u00a0unkind\u00a0or\u00a0offensive\u00a0messages on\u00a0social\u00a0media\u00a0sites, and who often tries to start arguments with other\u00a0users.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Stan\u2019s research shows that not all <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trolls post comments in order to anger or upset people. Some just do it for fun. They ask ridiculous questions on message boards and feign stupidity, without an intention to cause harm. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deindividuation<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the things that fascinated me about Stan\u2019s research was the idea of \u2018deindividuation\u2019 &#8211; acting as a group, rather than as a collective of individuals &#8211; changing our behaviour. In his words: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the same way that football hooligans gain reckless confidence by banding together, joining an online community of people with a unanimous opinion may make a user more likely to act aggressively. Like anonymity, this feeling of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2018deindividuation\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may play a role in the hostile behaviour of some users online \u2013 the uniformity of online identities may provide a platform for trolling to take place.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His research also shows that the disinhibition effect of being online means that people will behave in a way that is more intense. Before the emergence of social media as we know it today, research by J Suler in his 2004 paper<\/span> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyberpsychology and Behavior<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that people are more likely to exhibit intense, expressive behaviours online, including toxic behaviour that presents itself as \u201crude language, harsh criticisms, anger, hatred, even threats.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Six Factors Leading to Becoming Trolls Online<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stan told us that, according to Suler, there are six factors that come into play, which I\u2019ve summarised as: <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dissociative anonymity &#8211; the disconnection between a user\u2019s online behaviour and their real-life identity, which means they don\u2019t feel responsible for their actions <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invisibility &#8211; a lack of physical presence online means it\u2019s easier to say things you\u2019d never say face to face <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asynchronicity &#8211; the ability to walk away from your comments without seeing their impact<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solipsistic introjection<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0turning the person you interact with into a sort of character or part-fantasy figure, which makes it easier to be aggressive <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dissociative imagination<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowing the user to see their online interactions as more of a game than a real-life interaction with a human being <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deficiency of clear authority &#8211; real or perceived authority figures are more easily disregarded online. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This last point is critical. It means, as Stan says: \u201cWithout anyone moderating or guiding conversation online, toxic comments are more likely to arise.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know from our work in online communities and social media that a community left unmanaged becomes toxic very quickly. You need to set clear rules &#8211; and enforce them &#8211; early on in the life of the community. If you encourage and reward positive behaviour, collaboration, conversation and constructive discussion, then the community will thrive. Left alone, it will be overrun by trolls. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our thanks to Stan Campbell for his research on this subject.
